What you will learn

Week 1 – Foundations of professional dog grooming

Introduction to professional dog grooming
Workspace organisation, hygiene regulations, occupational safety
Canine anatomy, coat and skin, coat types and their care
Dog behaviour, recognising stress signals, communicating with the dog
Tools and their care and maintenance

Working safely at the grooming table, correct restraint
Brushing, combing, de-matting
Bathing: product choice, applying shampoo and conditioner
Stretch drying and drying techniques
Nail, ear and paw care

Week 2 – Clipper and scissor techniques

Clippers, blades, attachment combs, types of scissors
Coat preparation, planning the cut

Depending on availability, for example: Yorkshire terrier, Maltese, Havanese, Shih Tzu, mixed breeds
Hygiene areas, body line
Scissor hold, clipper control
Coat transitions, curves
Legs, paws, face, finish

Week 3 – Breed-specific grooming

Depending on availability, among others: poodle, Bichon Frisé, labradoodle, goldendoodle, spaniel, retriever, long-haired dogs, mixed breeds
Teddy head and Asian head styles
Breed-typical lines, scissor finish
Coat symmetry, silhouette, expression
Thinning scissors, perfecting scissor technique

Basics of hand stripping
Coat assessment, coat structure

Week 4 – Working independently in the salon

You work increasingly on your own under professional guidance
Receiving clients, consultation, coat analysis
Drawing up a work plan, complete groom
Quality check, time management, organising the working day
Client communication, care advice, handling complaints, professional manner
Independent grooming from drop-off to handover of the dog

Business basics

Pricing, scheduling
Salon organisation, hygiene management
Product recommendations, client retention
Winning new clients, professional client service
Google reviews, social media basics for grooming salons

How the course works

Format: One-to-one private training only, adapted to your progress
Schedule: Monday to Friday, 10 am – 4 pm
Course hours: 120 teaching hours
Practice: Mainly on the academy’s client dogs with as many different coat types and breeds as possible; by prior arrangement also on your own dog
Completion: A complete groom carried out independently under the instructor’s supervision, followed by the certificate of the International Grooming Association (IGA)
Location: Miez & Mops Dog Grooming Academy, Berlin

On successful completion you can groom dogs of different coat types to a professional standard and organise every workflow of a grooming salon on your own.
